About us…

Mind to Change was founded by Dutch anthropologist Ginny Mooy, in cooperation with ex-child soldiers Lansana Juana and Ibrahim Barry Jr. Along with a group of 25 ex-combatants, they initiate projects that stimulate social rehabilitation of the involved, always keeping a close eye on the ideas and needs of all stakeholders /of both ex-child soldiers and the community in general.

In the field

Our work is currently concentrated in Sierra Leone and mainly consists of providing guidance to the ex-combatants in facing the troubles of everyday life. We visit their homes, accompany them to school, go to church with them, partake in sporting events and join in on social occasions. Those who have no proper place to live can count on us to help them find one. Furthermore we try to restore the bond between them and their remaining families, hoping these can contribute in our effort of rehabilitation, as well as provide shelter and other care. Unfortunately, many ex-child soldiers have lost their parents, or have so far been unable to return to their hometowns on account of the violent acts they were forced to commit there. With family and community being the backbone of African societies, it is of vital importance that these relationships be restored.

Local volunteers, some of them successfully rehabilitated ex-combatants, join up with us throughout Sierra Leone to act as mentors for those in need of guidance.
